father of LSD is no more

I was surprised to read this. I thought he died along time a go. Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland in 1906. He graduated from the University of Zürich with a degree in chemistry in 1929 and went to work for Sandoz Pharmaceutical in Basel, Switzerland. With the laboratory goal of working towards isolation of the active principles of known medicinal plants, Hofmann worked with Mediterranean squill (Scilla maritima) for several years, before moving on to the study of Claviceps purpurea (ergot) and ergot alkaloids. Over the next few years, he worked his way through the lysergic acid derivatives, eventually synthesizing LSD-25 for the first time in 1938. After minimal testing, LSD-25 was set aside as he continued with other derivatives. Four years later, on April 16, 1943, he re-synthesized LSD-25 because he felt he might have missed something the first time around. That day, he became the first human to experience the effects of LSD after accidentally ingesting a minute amount. Three days later, on April 19, 1943, he decided to verify his results by intentionally ingesting 250 ug of LSD. This day has become known as "Bicycle Day" as Hofmann experienced an incredible bicycle ride on his way home from the lab. In addition to his discovery of LSD, he was also the first to synthesize psilocybin (the active constituent of 'magic mushrooms') in 1958. Albert Hofmann, known as the 'father of LSD', continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He continued to write, lecture, and play a leading role as an elder in the psychedelic community until his quick and relatively painless death from a heart attack at the age of 102.

For how far i know there isn't such a thing as onion architecture. The shape of an onion you see in many buildings. Its called the moorisch cupola if i'm right. A good example of this Moorish cupola is the Kremlin in Moscow


This is all about the total shape of the onion.
The architecture that is based, inspired or unintentionally looks like the parts of an onion is most found in the late expressionist architecture or the Deconstructivism architecture.
good examples are indeed the opera of Sydney, some of Calatrava his work, and some buildings in Dubai.

As I promised here are some pictures of my study-trip to Chicago and the Great Lakes. I can tell you we had lots of fun. Here are some pictures of Chicago

After a two days in Chicago, we packed our stuff and drove south with our three rental cars. That day we visited a distribution center of K-mart and a Steel plant in the afternoon. Both companies were eye-openers.
For all you non-Americans, K-mart is a discount-Hardware store which is a huge competitor of Wall-Mart.
The second visit that day was to Arccelor-Mittal, a Steel plant on Lake Michigan. We had a great tour there, those plants are so impressive! (and quite messy).
Tuesday (the next day) we went golfing with those cool golf-carts! I never thought golfing and racing with those carts would be that much fun!

After we totally ruined that golf course (you don't want to know how many holes I created while practicing my 'swing') we went to a warehouse of Caterpillar. This was a lot nicer to be than K-mart, what I experienced as a cold, greedy company. the working atmosphere at Caterpillar was much better, because they cared about their personel.
Wednesday we visited the Kenworth Plant near Chillicothe, Ohio. Quite an experience to be walking there. This is also the town where we went bowling. I have broken my personal record and set my all-time-high at a 175 points! (that's 5 strikes and 3 spares!)

The kind of trucks they make there. I even had the chance to climb in the cabin of one of these and played with the trottle!

After Kenworth we also visited Warren Rupp, a pump manufacturer, who was looking for some advice on their internal logistics. The last day of the 'company' days we went to a Ford-plant which was a bit of a disappointment.

During the trip we stayed in a lot of motels, but the one above was the absolute minimum. What a desolated, empty place!
On the day before our depature we went to a White Sox-game. Quite a scene to be, eating crack a jacks, hotdogs, watching the game.
Anyway, this was just a small selection of the obscene amount of photos I took.

Tourist snapshots from North Korea

While in Asia in 2007, TEDster Paul Koontz got the priceless chance to spend a few days in North Korea. He brought his kids and his camera, capturing both quotidian detail (like the military bearing of a lonely traffic warden) and the grand spectacle leading up to the Mass Games. This short slideshow gives a rare perspective on a culture that the rest of us know far too little about.

It also has a clip of the mass games at the end with a human LCD that's much more impressive than the one I posted previously.

Huge Trebuchet

The narrator is quite annoying but the trebuchet is mighty impressive.

A background story on this trebuchet. It seems like it was quite a straightforward build. They basically just strung some trees together. We should build one, once we have huge tracts of land at our disposal :) As a bonus a human slinging trebuchet.

Look closely!

From the video page: South korea: boys cheering for their soccer teams. the most amazing thing is that they do this with their CLOTHES (not holding up cards). they have a jacket that is one color on the back, one on the front, and that they can open or close to show a third color shirt on the inside. One school has also figured out how to use their pants to make shading.

Words compared Koran & Bible

for some reason this picture is high quality at my computer but when uploaded to blogger gives it a nice blur.

Anyway here are the stats:
For this stats i counted the precentage of how many times a word came for in the bible and the Koran compared to the total words in the bible(500000 words ) and Koran(80000 words). This precentage i multiply with 1000 to make it an easy to read number.

for example for the word kill (7 times counted in koran) i did (100*7/80000)*1000 makes 8,75.

i did with all the words out of the other table. I compared this numbers for the bible and Koran the one with the highest "%" i marked. The in my opinion positive words i marked with green and the in my opinion negative words with red.

i added up t the "%" of the negative words in the Koran and i deduced it with the % of the positive words in the Koran. Did the same with the bible words. And that give me a number that represented the aggression in both books (according a stupid word count).

And the winner = Koran with 17,5!
And a good seccond place for the bible with 15,2

I made a little website that shows 4 random images from the Google satellite images of the Sahara. Wrote a little javascript that generates a random location in the Sahara and shows it in a Google maps embedded thingy. You can generate new images by reloading or pressing the button on the bottom of the page.If I could design an art museum, I would create a server that generates random satellite images from different sections of the earth. Comparing countries, cities, continents and landscapes by showing random images from bounded area on earth. This all projected with high resolution beamers and shown on large LCD screens. So many cool things you can do with satellite images/aerial-images, high resolution beamers and large screens.

words in koran vs word in bible

on this site they got a search function in a bible and in the koran.
i searched at some words to compare the hit results in both books

The bible probably contain more words as the koran because most words got more counts then in the koran. I couldn't find how many words both book contain, and i'am to lazy to count them.

strange exception is that the word hell is more present in the koran then in the bible, its the only word that i could find that is more present in the koran then in the bible.

I did the same thing but then with Google with the Koran and bible in combinations with one of the words.
the difference in this google hits is probably that the bible reader are mostly more western people who are more online. again is hell the exception

still according this stats the bible counts more aggressive words as the koran, so people should think about tear pages out of the bible as well.

Of course counting words isn't a way to compare books or religions with each other. so this are just bullshit stats.

Just an other fact i see google gives more hits with bible + rimming then bible + hell.
