Bug flight patterns

Long exposure shot of bugs flying under a streetlamp.

My first and second attempt to work with a sketchpad

I'm quite happy with it. It's all made with just using the sketchpad. I've been using it as a mouse replacement for the moment. This is my second attempt:

Ingenious ink calender

This simple but nice idea from designer Oscar Diaz works with the capilair working of ink spreading across paper. This way it collors the days of the month.
Would be suprissing if it is close to accurate.

Improvements in Prosthetic Arms

It seems that war often drives medical innovation.
Amazing to see the interface between technology and the human body improving. The Singularity is near! Related to this post about a prosthetic arm.

God asks for sacrifice

Pimp's previous post was of Mitchell and Webb who have a lot of great sketches. Here's another one.

Apollo Landing Sites Finally Imaged

LROC NAC image showing the Apollo 14 lunar module (LM Antares) and the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP). Note the astronaut tracks between the two artifacts.
This is the first time the Apollo landing sites were imaged since the missions themselves. However, the lunar conspiracy theorists will probably claim these pictures were faked. These pictures are not even the highest resolution LRO can provide, future observation will have twice this much detail. More pictures...

New technique to make shaky cam videos stable

The kind of shaky handheld footage that is a hallmark of home movies has become popular with Hollywood directors in recent years. But new software means that handheld cameras need no longer give wobbly results.

Computer scientists at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and software giant Adobe have developed a technique that mixes 3D reconstruction with optical illusion to turn distinctive wobble of handheld camera footage into the smooth glide of a Hollywood tracking shot.
Warped thinking

The process starts using off-the-shelf software called Voodoo Camera Tracker that can reconstruct a camera's path through 3D space from a video sequence.

Using that as a reference, the software then tries to distort each frame to create the way things would have looked were the camera to have been on that perfect, smooth path. Rather like a fun house mirror, different regions of each frame are warped by different amounts.

Pretty cool stuff, could improve a lot of shaky cam YouTube videos.

European Anthem

I didn't know Europe had an anthem. It is the "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven. Unlike most anthems it is without lyrics because Europe has no one language, though the original German lyrics are sometimes sung.
With German lyrics

Cloud Busting Volcano from ISS

A fortuitous orbit of the International Space Station allowed the astronauts this striking view of Sarychev Volcano (Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in an early stage of eruption on June 12, 2009. More...
It appears that it is not a video but a computer animation of the series of photos that was shot from the ISS. Here is another one, not made by NASA:
