There is, google pre-resizes images in the following sizes(pixel width):
72, 144, 200, 288, 320, 400, 512, 576, 640, 720, 800, 912, 1024, 1152, 1280, 1440, 1600.
Change the s400 to i.e. s512 in the thumbnail url and you are done.
Ah, nice, I tried 500, but it didn't work. So 512 it is. Google must be using a lot of HDD space having that many copies of each image.
