I never really thought about this, but the sizes make some sense to me.
I checked the data with a very rough estimation; the figure is correct.
The earth is actually really smooth. If you would size the earth down to a billiard ball it would be smoother than one. So it makes sense that such a 'small' amount of water could cover the earth.
