Exactly, they say a nickel can save a child's life. But they send you a nickel to get you to donate. In the process it could be implied that Unicef lets a child die. I've donated to a few of these good causes and keep receiving spam mail which must cost them something. Next time I'll try to donate anonymously.
This is typical for the larger charities, although this comes in a very stupid form. You get a free magazine, toys, etc if you donate. Many charities spend more than 25% of their income on marketing. I met a guy, while traveling, who worked for save the children. He worked as marketing guy who received 4000 a month for socializing with rich people around the world (drinking wiskey and going to stripclubs) to get them to donate (again). I see how this brings in more money, but it feels a bit wrong.
There has to be a website with charities that don't "waste" their money on things like this.
