Gigapan Panoramas

About:
GigaPan consists of three technological developments: a robotic camera mount for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images using a standard digital camera; custom software for constructing very high-resolution gigapixel panoramas; and, a new type of website for exploring, sharing and commenting on gigapixel panoramas and the detail our users will discover within them. The GigaPan website allows hosting and sharing all kinds of panoramas, and so the robotic GigaPan mount is recommended but is certainly not required to be part of this community.

Check out the Gigapan website.

Great! Website also has some great panoramas.

I made a pretty detailed design, in my head, of this device during some train rides to Delft. A camera mounting on which different kind of normal cameras can be mounted. The only thing you need is a pointing mechanism and something that shoots the camera. The software part was already provided, and sparked the idea, by AutoStitch.

To make it easily compatible with many cameras, a mechanical finger was also my solution. A few simple parameters of the field of view of different types and brands of cameras need to be gathered and stored in such a way that the pointing is adapted to your personal camera.

Very simple electronics could make a simple mechanical device point to different, preprogrammed points.

All the data storage and processing is completely independently done by the cheap camera and pc.

It's a fairly straightforward and cheap design.

Anyway, that's just more or less what the GigaPan is.

Yep, good ideas are often thought of by more than one person :)
