In the video they say it was started by blacksmiths who were too poor to afford fireworks. Maybe nowadays fireworks are cheaper, but scrap metal should still be very cheap. I don't know how much they use and I don't know the after effects. I would guess that a lot of it burns up just like iron dust when you light it.
